2005 Oakville, Napa Valley Syrah - SOLD OUT!

2005 Oakville, Napa Valley Syrah - SOLD OUT!Winemaking teaches one patience. Long after most other 2005 Syrahs are long gone, ours is finally ready! Our 2005 Syrah aged for 24 months in French and American oak followed by nine months in the bottle. That's a long, long time for a Syrah. Happily, some things are well worth waiting for and we think this unique Oakville Syrah is one of them. One of the things we enjoy the most about Napa Valley is finding the improbable, hidden jewel. When we started with Oakville Zinfandel it was considered, well, "unusual". Critical acclaim of our premier 1999 Fly by Night Zinfandel told us we were on the right track. Emboldened by a little success we starting looking for the next hidden gem. Jim Del Bondio has been farming in Napa Valley all his life so when Jim talks about farming - and, trust us, Jim is not the talkative type - we have learned to listen carefully. About eight or nine years ago Jim thought Syrah would do well in Oakville. We sampled his grapes in 2002 and found them to be spectacular. In 2003 we harvested all of four tons and produced 275 cases of this unique Syrah. In 2005 we harvested our usual four tons (about 1 acre) and produced 278 cases.

Winemaker Randy Mason has once again produced a very special wine. The 2005 is well balanced with wonderful cherry fruit and is a terrific food wine. The wine combines Oakville's earthiness and outstanding fruit to create a very unique wine, quite different from an Aussie Shiraz or the central coast Syrah.
